Safety 2.0 in Action

Philosophy

Safety 2.0 recognizes two truths. First, most companies already have the basics of safety in place, and these efforts have improved overall injury rates. However, the same gains have not been seen in reducing Significant Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs), a challenge that requires going beyond compliance toward leadership engagement, resilient systems, and a stronger learning culture.

Second, in today’s complex operating environment, prediction and prevention are not always enough. Safety 2.0 draws from the Safety-II concepts championed by Eric Hollnagel, shifting the focus from solely preventing accidents to building the capacity to succeed under varying conditions. By integrating Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) and Systems Thinking, organizations can learn from everyday work, adapt to complexity, and better protect their people from life-altering events.

Approach

Safety 2.0 process is structured, collaborative, and tailored to your organization’s unique context.

Typical steps include:

1. Understand your priorities and risk profile with leadership input.

2. Diagnose through conversations at all levels and review of safety data.

3. Develop Options with leadership to address root causes and resource solutions.

4. Build a Roadmap for implementing agreed changes, often integrating HOP and Systems Thinking

5. Measure Progress with indicators to track and sustain improvements.
